Our Co-op program is designed to give hands-on experience to talented undergraduates in the areas of Engineering, Business, Finance, and Computer Science. This is an excellent opportunity to put classroom theory into actual practice. Our program provides students with an opportunity to build on their experiences through increased responsibility each returning semester. Our goal through this program is to train you to become a full-time employee with Southern Company.

Unlike other employers, we offer internships positions throughout the year to better accommodate your schedule. Our goal is to provide you with exposure to our company and challenge you with exciting work assignments.

Q. What is your hiring process?

  • Searching and applying for a position on-line is easy!
    To apply for a position, begin by reviewing our current postings listed under the "Campus Opportunities" section of our webpage. Find the opportunity you are interested in, click "Apply Online" and complete the online application. When you reach the "Thank You" page, you have successfully completed the job submission process for the position you selected.

    Campus Interviews
    This is your opportunity to tell us more about your skills, interests, and abilities. It is also a time for us to share more information about our company, career opportunities and culture. Our campus interviews are conducted through either the Career Services Office or Cooperative Education Office and are typically a one-on-one interview. To learn more about whether Southern Company is interviewing on your campus, please visit your local Career Services or Cooperative Education Office and sign up to interview with Southern Company.

    On-site Interviews
    This is your opportunity to tell a hiring manager and his/her team more about your skills and why you should be the candidate selected for the position. Our managers and their team will also spend time ensuring you have a clear understanding of the positions, expectations for success, and next steps in the hiring process. You may experience a panel interview in which several people in the room will ask you questions, or you may have a series of one-on-one interviews.

    Pre-employment Screening
    If you are extended an offer, upon your acceptance we will conduct a thorough pre-employment screen. This screen may include but is not limited to verifying your work and education history, a criminal background investigation and a drug screen.

    Hire
    Now that you have successfully completed the hiring process your next step is to report to work. Although this is last step in the hiring process, we expect it will be your first step toward fulfilling your career potential with Southern Company.

Q. Are co-ops/internships paid?

  • Yes. Southern Company offers a competitive co-op and internship compensation. Co-op/Intern salaries are determined by their academic level and major. Students are paid based on the technical and non-technical salary plans. Co-ops are also eligible for several employee benefits such as paid holidays, paid vacation, paid sick leave, and medical, life and dental insurance.

Q. What GPA do I need to apply for a co-op or intern position?

  • Co-ops will need to maintain a minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA. Interns will need a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

Q. How many rotations will a Co-op have to complete? Can I change my assignment midway through the program?

  • As a Co-op at Southern Company, you are committed to work 3 alternating semesters in the position you are hired into. It is strongly discouraged to change positions prior to completing 3 rotations.

Q. What happens if I change my major?

  • Your current major is a part of your pre-qualifications for a positions. Should you choose to change your major, you could jeopardize your employment. Please speak with your recruiter or program coordinator before making this decision.

Q. Do you assist with relocation or housing for co-op and/or intern students?

  • Yes Southern Company typically provides up to $500 per month if you relocate more than 50 miles to report to work. You must provide a housing lease and utilities are not included.
