Intern Spotlight

Name:
Nick

Year of internship:
Summer 2010

Area of internship:
Federal Government Relations
Department in Washington, D.C.

College/University: Xavier University

Working as a Walmart Customer Service Manager in West Chester, OH, Nick felt it was fate that he ended up with a Government Relations internship. While at the store one day, he struck up a conversation with a customer. The customer ended up being a sustainability representative from the Walmart Home Office and helped Nick score an internship in Washington, D.C.

“Washington D.C. is an amazing place to be for politics, and I wouldn’t have my summer any other way,” states Nick. “I am having a great time here at the corporate offices, and seeing how our company works with the Federal Government is amazing. Taking into account the views of our company, our associates and our customers on a daily basis, we work with legislators to help shape public policy so that we can continue to provide the excellent service that the public has come to expect.”

The Walmart internship is not about filling up the boss’ coffee or making copies. Interns have assignments in the field; attend hearings, fundraisers and markups. Some even get the chance to go to the White House. Nick felt like part of a team, working hand and hand on projects with other associates at the Walmart Federal Government Relations Office. The internship included a trip to Bentonville to participate in interviews and meetings with suppliers and various departments, so that Nick would have a better understanding of current projects.

During his internship, Nick rotated between different departments including: Sustainability, Transportation, Health Care, Tax & Financial Service, Trade and Food & Agriculture, as well as Labor Relations. The Walmart experience helped him understand how private companies interact with legislators. Nick is interested to see what next year will bring as he looks into other internship opportunities – possibly in Bentonville or in his own region of Southern Ohio, whatever it takes to further his career with Walmart.
